Recently, over at Mamaneedsabookcontract, we talked about niches (we choose a theme each week, and blog on it - its amazing how simple a topic becomes diverse and complex answers).
This week our theme was ‘niches’ - which is important to bloggers.
All of the answers that were posted resonated with me, but Heather’s post was the best for bloggers.  So, go read it, and then come back.

How to blog series - sample article - Where do I start with blogging?

March 6, 2008

It has become THE single biggest web crazes online, and I was one of the first people to actually vocalise using blogging as a business model on Ryze and other online forums (and I so wish I’d followed through that thought too), so I’ve been doing this for several years now - and every year, it evolves that little bit more.

What writers and business owners can learn from Babylon 5

March 5, 2008

I am a sci fi geek.
I prove it, frequently, over at IRLfemale - gamer, irreverance and other fun stuff, but there’s something I worked out whilst watching Babylon 5.
Babylon 5 was a sci fi TV show that was plotted over at least five seaons. It got to season three, and J Michael Straczynski needed to change the story arc, due to the possibility of cancellation.

But it highlights a couple of things about good writing, better work, and engaging your audience.

Writing posts, five by five

March 1, 2008

I’m undertaking a small blogging experiment at the moment - what happens when I write the content for certian blogs on certain days and GET INTO the habit of only writing then for that blog (of course, there’s a couple of exceptions to this, but I’ll explain in a minute).

The practice of ‘five by five’ing isn’t a new one in the blogging communtiy, but it does, in many ways, take slightly more self control and interest in what you’re doing than other ways of blogging.

What a difference an hour makes

February 1, 2008

I know what you’re thinking – where am I going to find an hour?

A whole 60 minutes…I mean, that’s just….unthinkable.

But if you can spare an hour every few days, I guarantee that you will see some sort of increase in your traffic.

How can I make that promise?

Easy, I use this method personally to ensure the success of my blogs, articles and anything else I get deeply involved in.

So what’s this hour?

The holy grail of the Internet

January 25, 2008

Businesses online want, ultimately, one thing.
Money.

Whether you’re online to up your exposure or directly sell a product, you will always find, at the root of it, the want to exchange a product or service for its value.
So where does blogging and podcasting fit into this?

A lot of my clients, when consulted have said that they stopped blogging/podcasting because ‘the money just wasn’t there’. When asked if their business showed an appreciable rise, 9/10ths of them said yes.
And that it had dropped over time since they’d stopped.

Anatomy of a blog

January 24, 2008

Blogs have several necessary and needed elements. It used to be enough to place static posts on your site - now, people have designed reams and reams of scripts, designed to do everything, except, possibly, what you expect.
The most common question I’m asked about blogging is ‘what IS a blog exactly?’
A blog is a weblog. Nothing more, nothing less.
So, what are the best functions - the definitional attributes of a blog?

Blogging for Wahms

January 24, 2008

Blogging can be one of the easiest ways to spread the word about your WAHM business, and in fact, can be a business in itself. However, that does not mean that it is easy to make money from your blog. Don’t start a blog and expect to see money rolling in immediately. Like everything else online, you’ll find that consistent work pays off - and lax inattention results in very little.

Hot tip (Aweber)

January 24, 2008

You can sign up for Aweber here

One of the biggest complaints I’ve heard lately from my clients is that they have to put in ‘an extra step or six’ to tell their auto-responder subscribers that their blog has updated.

The good news is that if you’re with places like Aweber, they offer a way to post your blog - or in some cases, specific posts from your blog, to your newsletter straight away.
